Idea to Reality
JUNE 2011 / BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
The idea of a sports camp for kids who have diabetes floated around in my head, while being sacked by large beer-bellied Flemish speaking Belgians – playing for the Brussels Bulls American Football team.
JULY 2011 / WALNUT CREEK, CA
Speaking at the request of JDRFat its annual college night panel I met Shelby and Sydney Payne. The Payne Sisters are defending national champions in women’s soccer at Stanford University. I pitched the idea of a sports camp for kids who have diabetes to Shelby, who also is a Type 1 athlete – and DASH Camp was started. By November we had been meeting every Saturday via conference call or in person with a cohort of young entrepreneurs, mostly our best friends from college who were excited because we were excited.
SEPTEMBER 2012 / PALO ALTO, CA
Our first DASH Camp, with around 30 DASH Campers, exceeded all of our expectations. We just received our third grant to hold our next two camps in Oakland, California in March and July 2013. All of our grants are used to subsidize DASH Camper fees and help us to offer at least full scholarships for all of our DASH Campers.
