West Oakland Diabetes and Basketball Education Program

In collaboration with the West Oakland branch of the YMCA, DASH is creating a basketball and diabetes education program. For several weeks during the school year, DASH staff will teach West Oakland youth the basics to a motion offense in basketball and the fundamentals of carb counting, medication dosing and symptom awareness in diabetes management.

In the fall, DASH is looking to team up with West Oakland’s Teen Center, Chef Craig Smith and PT Delancy Baker for a pilot program called Cooking Up Life Change. This program will look to combine locally sourced foods, basic nutrition information, applicability of eating (i.e. what’s your food doing in your body and how you interact with it throughout the day), diabetes management basics and basketball.

We will look to incorporate older high school youth with and without diabetes into these two pilots as our DASH Educators in training module. The goal will be for graduating older youth to give back to their DASH communities as volunteers for the next DASH program in their hood.
